Contemporary university students face numerous challenges and stressors and a significant proportion of them experience mental health difficulties during their time at university (as outlined in Research snapshot 1.1). Responding to and supporting students in distress can be challenging for academic educators. What can you say that is helpful to a student who is distressed or discloses personal trauma or abuse? What is and isn’t your role?

This module offers practical strategies and advice from experienced educators and mental health professionals on how to have difficult conversations and communications with students experiencing distress or disclosing sensitive personal information. See Module 5 for advice on maintaining your own wellbeing while supporting students.
